Did you know . . .
Michigan Law States . . .
- Those less than 14 years of age may not legally operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC), such as a jet-ski or wave runner.
- Those at least 16 years of age and born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate.
- Those born on or after July 1, 1996, may operate a boat legally only if they have been issued a boating safety certificate and have it on board the boat.
Disturbing Statistics . . .
- More people in their 30s die in boating accidents than any other age group.
- Drowning accounts for 70 percent of all boating fatalities, and in those cases, 84 percent of victims were not wearing a life jacket.
- In 89 percent of boating fatalities, the operator did not have proper safety training.
Watercraft Insurance
Most home insurance policies have limited coverage for boats. If you own a boat, watercraft insurance is your best bet: It covers theft, damage, and injuries or accidents while you’re on the water, as well as some of your expensive watersports gear.
