National Women’s History Month
March is a month of many things- and one of them is Women’s History Month.
Women’s history month dates back to 1909, when the very first International Women’s Day was celebrated. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th to be National Women’s History week. From there, in 1987, a bill was passed designating the month of March to be Women’s History Month and U.S. presidents since then have passed annual proclamations designating the month to Women’s History.
Many states developed and distributed curriculum to students to help teach the importance of women in history and today- especially their position in the workforce. After all, the World Wars would not have been won without the help of women.
Since 1987, the National Women’s History Project has developed annual themes for Women’s History Month. These themes include “”Reclaiming the Past, Rewriting the Future” from 1988, “See History in a New Way” from 1996, “Celebrating Women of Courage and Vision” from 2000, and “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination:Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” from 2013. Of course there are many more, and each year has special powers to build women up in their own ways.
National Women’s History Month not only empowers young girls, but gives celebration to equality all over the country and the world. Women’s History Month is to celebrate all women in your life- mothers, sisters, educators, coworkers, and more!
Who’s a woman in your life that you’re thankful for? Who has inspired you?
