New Michigan Auto Insurance
I Am Divorced And Share Custody Of My Child With My Ex- What Should I Do?
We at FIA understand that being a parent is your number one priority. We work tediously to ensure that both you and your children receive the coverage that best benefit your individual needs. In the event of a divorce, there are many unknowns. Insurance doesn’t have to be another thing that causes you stress. With the new laws coming in July 2020, many are questioning how their new auto insurance will impact their children.
In the event where the parents of a child are not together, the child’s coverage depends on how the custody is split in the court system. For example, if custody is split 50/50, then the child would be covered by the insurance benefits of the house that they are staying at in the event of an accident. If the child stays with one of the parents for more than 50% of the time, they should be listed as a primary resident on the insurance policy of that parent. Once the child is old enough to have a driver’s license, the address of the parent with whom they primarily reside should be listed on the license.
Residence can get tricky in split households, so be sure to explain to your agent the whole extent of your custody agreement.
