New Michigan Auto Insurance
I Was Biking On The Road And Was Hit By A Driver- What Do I Do?
We believe that you should always be safe on the road, whether you’re driving, biking, or walking. Because of that, we will take all the necessary steps to ensure that you are covered by insurance to the best of our ability. In the unfortunate incident that you are biking on the road and are struck by a driver, there are many factors that may come into play when it comes to dealing with any medical bills.
If you have purchased an auto policy and it is active at the time of said accident, the insurance will respond with the Personal Injury Protection Limits that you have chosen. PIPL (Personal Injury Protection Limits) is included in your auto policy at time of purchase, based on the limits you choose. For example, if you choose your PIPL to be $500,000, then the insurance company will pay up to $500,000 in medical fees in the event of an accident. If you choose to purchase unlimited medical, then any and all medical bills will be covered. There are other options as well, so be sure to speak with your agent about what you expect to spend on your yearly insurance and what options there are for you.
In the event of an accident where you do not have auto insurance, your bills will refer to the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan for coverage. The MACP gives PIP coverage to uninsured people who were injured by a person who owns, operates, is using, or is performing maintenance on a motor vehicle. The benefits may also be claimed if the injured person was a driver or a passenger of a motorcycle, as long as the other vehicle was uninsured (cannot be another motorcycle). In the event of an accident, you must go to the MACP website and file a claim to receive your benefits. The benefit level for the MACP is $250,000 which means that any bills over $250,000 will be the injured party’s responsibility to pay. We understand that these new laws may be confusing, so go to https://www.michacp.org/ to learn more about this program.

**The Michigan Assigned Claims Plan was established by the state of Michigan in 1973 to provide access to Michigan No Fault Benefits for people in a car or truck accident when no applicable car insurance is available. You must apply for MACP to be eligible for the benefits. Go to https://www.michacp.org/file-claim.aspx for more information.
